Your junior year will be filled with great opportunities and challenging academic classes. We hope the next months are exciting, fun and fulfilling. Please keep the following in mind:
Your junior year will be filled with great opportunities and challenging academic classes. We hope the next months are exciting, fun and fulfilling. Please keep the following in mind:
- Stay focused on academics. We know you are busy with extracurricular activities and outside jobs, but you must keep your schoolwork your priority! Stay focused on academics. Your GPA counts!
- Keep an accurate calendar or planner. You will need to keep track of many things, such as testing dates (PSAT, ASVAB) and more.
- You should narrow down some ideas regarding what you are going to do after you graduate and explore those choices. Remember you can explore a university, community college, apprenticeship, or the military.
- Complete a career exploration survey if you have not. Talk to relatives, job shadow someone in a position you have an interest in, research careers on the Internet. Ask your counselor for assistance.
- Continue to develop your hobbies and interests.
- Know where to find scholarship information at your school. Check out your career center.
- See your counselor often!
- Make use of the many resources available to you: this website, the counselor & the Career Center.
- Listen to or read the announcements everyday!
JUNIOR YEAR TIMELINE:
October/November / December
- Research your career plans and post-secondary education choices using AKCIS.
- Start narrowing school/after school option choices down to five or six.
- Take the PSAT. Sign up in Counseling
- Sign up to take the ACT, SAT, or Workkeys for spring
- Complete course selections for senior year.
- Start lining up a summer job.
- Make sure you have taken the ACT, SAT or Workkeys. Should I take the ACT or SAT?
- See counselor if interested in any of the military academies or ROTC scholarships.
- Discuss preliminary choices of schools with counselor.
- Finalize course schedule for senior year.
- If appropriate, mail in your NCAA application.
- If possible, visit the campuses of colleges you are interested in.
- Taking an enrichment class at UAF
- Participate in the Summer Fine Arts camp
- Take a course on-line
- Volunteer for community service
- Arrange to attend the College Fair at UAF and any other college sessions during the course of the year.
- Attend any evening meetings held by the counselors for all juniors and their parents.
- Make an appointment with your counselor for a student/parent meeting.

The Rural Alaska Honor's Institute (RAHI)
The Rural Alaska Honor's Institute (RAHI) provides rural and Alaska Native students* with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the college experience for six weeks. High school junior and senior students live in the dorms and take college level courses. They earn 8-10 credits and learn firsthand what it takes to succeed in college. In addition to the rigorous academic program, students learn study skills and time management and by the end of the program, our proven record shows these students are ready for the challenge of succeeding in college.
